Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

their are various objects, smells phases and many more that have the ability to transport a person to an era where worries boiled down to the simpler things. A term i read in a article long back Objects of Innocence one of my favourite phases.

Jumanji is one such phase, i fondly remember the film. as a child i oh so dreamed about having a chance to play the game have fun with real life adventure, a world of fantasy and wildlife that was just out there.

I have always been spilt on the concepts of sequels or spin offs that in many ways are trying to capitalise on the nostalgia market, i don’t condemn them yet they just never sit well. As such any critic or value of the film I see tends to coated by a layer of biases. The film is over all a fun ride the charisma of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan along with the chemistry they generate can be called the true core of the film. As for the story i am not really on board with it, it just does the bare minimum to save the Jumanji name and give itself a reason to use it.

Now all in all if someone asks me was it fun I will say Yes, if someone asks me to recommend a game like film would I, Yes, and was it better than the first NO (imo).

Virus (2019)

way before this virus extravaganza started, the state of Kerala in India had suffered through a Nipah virus outbreak. and you know it if anything interesting happens it will become a film given enough time.

thus Virus (2019) is born, a Malayalam language medical thriller on the virus outbreak dramatising the various actions and individual scenarios the the state and its authority faced while facing an invisible enemy. the movie basically boils down to 2 elements finding the patient zero and containing the outbreak.

this film had a surprisingly compact pacing which was something i was not expecting as many a times films like these allowing the films narrative to never break and flow through seamlessly. the film boost a huge star cast from veterans to up and coming actors and actresses. weaving the various streamlines and backstories just enough to engage the viewers and provide depth to characters. As this is a story of how a RNA wrapped in protein affects the lives of those that come in contact with it.

the best thing about this film from my perspective was the lack of glorifying any particular individual, grounding the film to a realistic manner where is the collaborations and decisions of individuals that shape the narrative rather than one man doing everything.

one thing that kept going through my mind as i watched the film end was i wish the current virus bonanza was handled by the nation like the Nipah virus was done.

Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

When i first watched Kick ass (2010) i was in high school and super heroes where things of comics and cartoons, thus seeing a movie about superhero origins along with being subversive and Bloodier than norm pushed it to ranks of films i greatly enjoyed.

i wasn’t aware of a sequel to it until i saw the movie poster during a visit to the cinemas for some other random film, and i distinctly remember feel this is not gonna turn out to be good. I don’t know what psychic powers i unlocked for a moment there but after so many years i was RIGHT.

Kick-Ass 2 all in all feels like a fan made film about the first one than an actual sequel. there is this tonal dissonance the film has that always just persists. the first film felt more linearly amping up the stakes to the eventually climax of bazooka to the main boss, without truly feeling jarring yet the sequel doesn’t understand this lesson and adds divergent plot points to make you question the movie genre itself. over the multiple characters, limp humour, cringe and a serious lack of finding the flow it would be really hard to say i enjoyed this film.

all this could be me being cynical and remembering the first film in rose tinted glasses. yet for my money Kick Ass 2 is another victim of the sequel curse.

Race Gurram (2014)

the term masala film that i am guilty of using more that usual to refer to mass family entertainer films mostly coming from the southern film industry, is broad term encompassing films that tend to have various elements of Action Drama Comedy Romance Musical etc….

Race Gurram which is translated to Race Horse, is a Telugu Film that is such a prototypical Masala film that me even after watching am having difficulties write down an accurate synopsis. the films has a lot of stuff in it eccentric villains, brotherly conflict, comedic side characters, Love interest…. in jist the films about two polar opposite brothers uniting after long time due to common enemy.

the film was a hit when it was released, i can see why as its a crowd pleaser but not for me it could be today wasn’t a good day to watch a masala film like this. This film has no proper rhythm to its masalaness (if that’s a word) with the tone and genre shifting gears often, having stationary female characters. this is not a break the mold film in any regard yet the way the film feels just like any commercial film makes it very hard for me to say anything substantial about it. if there is one thing to wards the climax i was enjoying myself but it could be because i knew the film was ending.

would i recommend it NO, but unlike me if u come across it and watch it remember to switch off the brain

Gully Boy (2019)

Even before i had seen the movie i heard its songs being played everywhere, it becoming meme, people praising the film. yet ever since i heard of its synopsis i remained sceptical on how good it truly could be. then i heard this film was Indian entry for the 92nd Academy Awards, i placed the film onto my watch list (that i finally gotto) if not for anything just clear away or validate my notions.

Gully Boy, An Indian musical drama film about the Indian Street Rap scene, inspired by the life’s and struggles of real Indian Rappers Divine and Naezy. I am never been much of a music guy thus i never heard of them but even without me wanting after the release of the film most my friends become pseudo encyclopedias about it all and imparted then knowledge onto me. The film mainly focuses on the life and struggles of Murad Ahmed (Ranveer Singh) the aspiring rapper going by the name Gully boy. A coming of age story in finding and pursuing his passion.

the film does have many memorable performances Alia Bhatt as Murad’s girlfriend, Siddhant Chaturvedi as MC Sher, Vijay Raaz as Murad’s disapproving and abusive father and many more. yet the one that truly sucks you in the one that makes the character his own, Ranveer Singh from expressions to demeanor will feel flawless. The films also is beautifully shot rustic nature the film showcases makes it realistic yet grandiose when required.

coming to my main notion of it being an Indian Oscar entry i feel really spilt since i cant definitely say there were better film in that year as i am far behind my watch list of films yet i surely think film might make many feel the similarities it has to other such film like 8Mile (2002) many more of such genre. something i felt strongly even before i watched the film and just read the synopsis. As of now i will say that it would have been my choice too for entry but only by a thread which will break oneday if i find a better film to topple its rank.

the film is definitely worthy of all praises it got and is really a great film which i would recommend to those looking for a indie feel film but not on a budget of one.

Kingdom of Heaven (2005)

After watching the film and researching about it i got to know i watched the directors cut of the film, unknowingly though in the hindsight that was the better choice as most people agree for it to be the definite version.

the epic historical film was my jam, watching this film right around the time i am reading about Saladin is a cherry on top. the film feels truly epic as there always felt more to the story than being shown yet never incomplete.

what was lovely about the film is its cast who all played their roles as to make them believable entitles of history books, yet the protagonist Balian of Ibelin (Orlando Bloom) seemed missing some elements just enough to never draw me in, though its possible i was more fascinated by Saladin (Ghassan Massoud) than Balian of Ibelin.

just of the mask i felt this guy (Baldwin IV) to be the coolest

to anyone who is on the same boat to watch an epic with historical content this film is a definite recommendation
