Annihilation (2018)

a quarantined zone which has been named the ‘Shimmer’ has appeared inside the zone the nature and its inhabitants are being mutated to find what is going on inside. soldiers are sent but unfortunately no one ever returns. among the soldiers sent one was Kane (Oscar Isaac) husband of Lena (Natalie Portman) who doesn’t hears from him in over a year after his disappearance until one day Kane appears in the house. only to fall sick. this is when Lena gets transported to the Base camp in front of the Shimmer and is given the information about what is happening and what happened to her husband.

Another expedition is being planned inside the Shimmer this time a all female group, Lena plans to accompany and part take in this. inside the shimmer the face the danger that the Shimmer has created, inside the shimmer is both beautiful and dangerous, the mutations of animals have caused them to become different and much more dangerous. for eg a bear that could mimic the sounds of humans. these dangers cause the crew members to get caught and being lost forever. the Shimmer is like a prism and is reflecting the memories and DNA of the individual inside the Shimmer and duplicating the world in its way. Lena reaches the epicentre of the Shimmer and Faces the cause of this creations.

the cast all are broken individuals in one way or other, some heaving had lost loved ones, one that tried to end themselves, and some that are here for much different reason all tying to the underlying theme of destruction.

it has underlying theme of the self destructive nature that humans possesses, such like the acts of drinking and smoking. a behaviour that oh so common in all sorts of organism from single cell to multi.

this is a type of movie that splits the audience down in the middle, you either love it or hate it. i for one am the later yet i will say you should give it a try if you want to watch some sci-fi.

Ente Ummante Peru (2018)

a 2018 Mollywood movie about a boy looking for his biological mother to have a family after his father’s death. Ente Ummante Peru means ‘My Mother’s Name’ in Malayalam.

the story starts with a death, that of Hameed’s father, who was the only family Hameed (
Tovino Thomas) had ever known to alleviate his sadness his fathers close friends suggested to have him get married. this didn’t go as planned as the women’s family rejected his proposal on the basis that he was an orphan and had on one as a family on his side. this propellers Hameed and his best bud Beeran (Hareesh Kanaran) to go on a quest to find his biological mother, finding a clue that his father had two wives in his life, to whom he wanted his fortune to be shared. on his quest he meets the 1st wife who turns out not to be the one, but Hameed carries on only to finally find the 2nd wife Aisha (Urvashi) who says she is his mother, but things dont seem to be all that alright with it. As another possible lead pops up this on will take Hameed to Lucknow to find the truth.

Tovino Thomas‘s and Urvashi‘s relationship and dynamics is the main crux of the story, it has it moments so relate-able that made me nostalgic, but certain points went on for long to fell dragged too. Hareesh Kanaran who acts the best friend in the story and is also the comic relief performs his duty nicely.

the movies biggest draw back for me was the dragged pace the film has, it felt to me some scenes were done with pure intentions but poor execution. overall the movie is a sweet movie trying to showcases not all the time family needs to be what we relate by definitions.

Me Before You (2016)

Will traynor (Sam Claflin) was a young successful and happy billionaire, until a abrupt accident caused him lose his limbs and become quadriplegic. to uplift his spirit his parents decided to have someone take care of him, someone who could put up his rude attitude after the accident. Someone to bring joy to his life even a little. Here enters Lou Clark (Emilia Clarke) an jolly chatty girl, jumping from one job to next to help her family landing the job to take care or Will. things dont start out great for Lou as Will’s attitude made it hard for her to interact with him, but slowing and surely her charm override his attitude made him open up and interact. this resulted in a good friendship and hint of something more. this friendship turns into a mutual love, only for Lou to get to know that Will had made a decision long back to Commit Euthanasia, even so Lou tries her hardest to make Will change his views and prevent from going through with it, will she succeed, and what it means for their love.

Sam Claflin did a good job portraying a Quadriplegic who has lost his will and wants it to end, Matthew Lewis who plays Lou’s boyfriend portrays the society and life that Lou is part of but not by her choice as she doesn’t fell herself around it.Emilia Clarke just stole the show in this film her expression and antics just made the movie enjoyable and charming.

charm, charm is what this movie has to offer to its audience.

to me this movie had a similar feeling to the Bollywood movie Guzaarish (2010) which is a great movie in it own right. that being said it is a good movie to watch for all those romantic movie fans out there.

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

A road trip that changed the life of its Travellers, 2 young adults from Argentina.
Ernesto (Gael García Bernal) a 23-year-old medical student and his friend 29yr old Alberto Granado (Rodrigo De la Serna), a biochemist. Decide to travel and go on a road trip trough south america visiting the various nations and cultures.

the trip that they take on a bike named, the mighty one. they from Argentina to Peru. a trip that only relies on them talking there way for things and for out of things, in short simply having a coming of age adventure. during them trip they visit the various sites around the Americas meet and interact with its people. having the ‘mighty one’ get busted, having to walk and take lifts most of the journey. this trip tested them their conviction to stay the path and not take the easy way only to acted as an eye opener and life lesson provider for our protagonist.

“This isn’t a tale about heroic feats. It’s about two lives running parallel for a while, with common aspirations and similar dreams.”

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, 1952

this quote that starts the movie sums up the movie perfectly as there is nothing else that need to be said to explain its premise.

the story is showcased in a view point of the Our main protagonist Ernesto and how the peril of his fellow Latin Americans makes him realise his own calling and belief, challenging him and changing him on his journey for better or worse. all the while having a a companion that is with him through thick and thin.

a movie that makes you want to go on such a coming of age journey yourself to know yourself and the world we live, not just exist in it. the movie has amazing visuals of the natural beauty of the natives and people of the south america and the nature that surround its.

Wandering around our America has changed me more than I thought. I am not me any more. At least I’m not the same me I was.

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna

yes this is the true story of the road trip between two Friends that changed the life of a 23 old to become among the most iconic Marxist guerrilla commander and revolutionaryChe Guevara‘.

i would defiantly recommend this movie as its a movie that moves you with not worlds, but the visuals and worlds that it allows the viewer to see and experience, to see the way a simple journey held more weight on history than we can ever understand.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

i know i am late to the party, but hot damn i was blown away rating it 9/10 right of the bat, you don’t need to read what i am about to right because the movie is worth all the praise it gets for everyone.

the movie is a pure visual treat, the pop-ing colours and effects, ever moving and changing makes you just remain immersed in the medium. they way they handled the opening scene, no even before the production house logos gave a hint i am in for a wild ride, and what a ride it was. i cant state this enough but i enjoyed this movie way too much, this movie gives the feel of a movie made by geeks for geeks all the while appealing to everyone and that is the beauty of this film. i cant even begin to explain how great a choice it was to keep the comic book feel to the animations.

no matter how much live action marvel or DC movies get hype, in my opinion only animation is a medium that can truly present the comic booky feeling in its at most glory to a motion picture, just the way a the cartoonish proportion of Kingpin feels nature and comic like makes my day. these little things just add up from noir spiderman’s interest to Rubik’s cube to final end credit scene the movie knows what it is and owns it perfectly.

lets talk about voice acting, man oh man that amazing performance from everyone not for a second i ever feel distracted from them, gripped to my seat for the next line of joke or comment they make, it felt as the voice actors truly had fun voicing their characters and that brings the best in them. the ensemble cast of different spider-man from various universes just made the movie so much cool.

the best scene that had me laughing for me was the Stan lee scene where his line felt so genuine just what you expect a uplifting line to be like, After death of Parker, miles goes to buy a spider-man outfit when he asked the owner Stan lee if he could return the suit if it doesn’t fit him to which he replies – it always fits, ‘eventually’.

until you see the why he says that as the store behind him says no refund.

if this is the future for the superhero movie genre then sign me up.

Constantine: City of Demons (2018)

a DC comics animated web series that was released as a feature length movie. no matter how much the marvel movies sell and rock the live Acton industry for animation DC just rules. and this here is an example of that.

the story revolves around the supernatural detective John Constantine who specialises in occult and demon exorcism using spells and incantations, gets called up by a old childhood friend, Chas Chandler his best bud so to say to help him save his daughter who he loves more than anything. upon his visit to Trish, they go to Los Angeles as that where the demon that has kidnapped her soul. to save her soul the demon Beroul one that john released long time ago by mistake wants him to destroy any competitors to to his business of souls in Los Angeles, thus John goes around Angeles to find all the demons and make them fight each other using his smarts to trick them into a trap and cause their downfall. with this he expected that the demon Beroul would release Trish but like all demon he lied and blackmails him to stay as his worker to destroy any future competitor. thus now John makes a hail Mary plan to defeat Beroul and save Trish, but such choices have a price to pay which might just be too expensive to pay.

this is a nice movie and has a feeling of consequence to it which makes the movie feel more gritty and not only a easy happy ending one, the voice acting is pretty good in this movie, a easy and simple watch for any superhero movies fan.

Varathan (2018)

Have you ever moved to a new place then the feeling of creepiness the place gives you in your gut may be something, but the gut feels away as you realise how silly that feeling was, but what if that feeling of someone being there watching you all become a cruel reality.

the movies starts with our protagonist Abin (Fahadh Faasil) losing his last hope for a job, now jobless in Dubai with a wife Priya (Aishwarya Lekshmi) they decide to move to Kerala for better prospects. there they move into the Priya’s family estate house in rural Kerala. a region that is still far from an ideal society with its own norms and beliefs. Priya becomes the target of Rowdy guys of this town who harasses her through various means. this results in an accident that causes hurt to Priya. she has enough of this harassment and decides to leave, during this time a boy who is being hunted down by the thugs takes refuge in Abin’s house. thus they try to invade this house a wrong choice than them.

the last quarter of the movie turns into a adult home alone version with Abin finally having had enough putting up resistance to the invaders into his house.

the final action sequence feels a bit out of place and pace though it not at all a bad thing but it genuinely isn’t how one would expect it to go, the sequence does have the impact to allow the audience to finally relieve the tension and unease that got generated during the earlier parts of the movie.

a movie i would recommend only for the final scene bad-assery that Abin has and the fun manner he wards of the invaders. a tag of fun watch and 6/10.

Logan (2017)

for 19 years there existed a character from comic book in real life portrayed to such an amazing extent that we cant even think of someone doing it other than him. ya i am talking about Hugh Jackman as the wolverine.

the story begins with us getting to see the old man Logan (Hugh Jackman) the worn out tired a husk of his former self, The wolverine in name only. fight of some random car tire Smugglers and still taking beating from them. this a a year far in future and the age of mutants is supposed to be long gone with no new ones being born since 25 years, there are only 3 known mutants left and 2 among them plan to kill themselves as living has become a hassle. these 2 mutants are Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and wolverine. it is during this time that they come across a new age mutant Lara (Dafne Keen) and decide to save her from people who want to capture her and make her into a weapon. only to realise there are more mutants like her, many kids who have been modified to become mutants. wolverine even though reluctant to help decides because of his good heart helps them anyway. All the while the organisation is after them to capture and terminate Wolverine.

the grittiness of this movie is its charm, it was a very good decision to make this movie a R rated one as to convey the intensity and raw emotions the movie needed to shed its much more kid friendly atmosphere that previous films had, not saying that it lacks such moments no, yet it capitalises of its bloody conflicts to convey the inner turmoil our protagonist suffers and why his decisions that he makes makes sense to us.

there is a sense of realism that Hugh has in this movie that could be that as the manner the movie ends and him having played this character in multiple movies in that past 17 years (till the time of the release of this movie). we see the effort he takes to play him again and it feels truly heart warming and tear inducing. i wont be lying if i say i weld up in the last scene of this movie as i knew and some corner of my heart this was coming though inevitable it still is a sad feel-full moment.

a movie i recommend thus for that fact it marks the sup-possible end of a 17 year old character being portrayed beautifully.

The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

the story that took the devil part of the title too literally……

A Hollywood movie featuring Keanu Reeves as Young undefeated Lawyer, Kevin Lomax,
Charlize Theron as Mary Ann the ever loving wife of Kevin and Al Pacino as a John Milton the boss at the Law firm in New York Kevin works.

the story begins with us seeing the skill and ability of Kevin to change the opinion of the jury of an truly guilty sex offender and allow him to walk free. this also put him under the radar of big firms like that lead by John Milton. this makes him take up the offer and move to New York with his wife Mary Ann. again showcasing his talents by setting up a jury for a case that for the firm on his First day. this makes him come under the guidance of john milton himself who sees future in the kid. All this while Mary is having hard time adjusting to the city and feeling the distance between Kevin and her widen. This causes a metal breakdown of her with she unable to keep her sanity. Certain associates of Kevin in the firm who were gonna rat on many illegal things that the firm does die under random suspicious circumstances. these instances causes Kevin’s mother who comes to visit Kevin and upon meeting Milton mentions to Kevin his father is John.

All this while a twist was in the movie the certain supernatural aspects of the movie turn out to be because of the the John the Literal Devil (not a joke). and he caused every thing so that Kevin will come to him and bring forth a child who can rule the world effectively become the Antichrist. A decision that Kevin disapproves and commits suicide…….only to wake up from a dream and realise he is still in the court for the earlier sex offender case, thus time he doesn’t help the guilty party and withdraws from representing him knowing he is guilty. but as the film ends we see that John was there in the court as so was what Kevin saw truly a dream…

this was a good movie with commendable performance from Al Pacino as the devil. but where the movie fell of the rail to me was the fact that the gimmick of devil in the movie itself didn’t set well with me, till nearly the first half of the movie i was enjoying it but from then onwords the film felt to go into a realm not meant for my taste.

yet the film does have its good points and is worth a watch for those who are interested in such a plot. definitely not for everyone.

Thattathin Marayathu (2012)

A Malayalam Rom-Com movie about inter caste love, the feeling of love sees no caste nor creed it just looks itself. the title means in English Beneath the Shadow of the veil

the story is about Vinod (Nivin Pauly) a middle class Hindu family son who at a wedding function causes the accident that results in Aisha (Isha Talwar) a Muslim and daughter of a party head. This incident causes Vinod to fall in love and be smitten with her. this causes him to follow her and try to stay around her (not in a stalker fashion), until on day he guts himself and and proposes to her, this leads to the wait for her reply. which eventually comes and is a mutual Feeling. This is the answer Vinod was waiting for. but this only started the problems for them as her father gets to know about her relation and is against it, because of his caste and background. they prevented from meeting each other but start communicating in letters and falling more in love.

the movie has a sweet premise but there were certain sequences where it lacks the charm or the pace felt a bit loose, overall its a fine movie though it has its share of cliques that are found in most rom-coms. its a simple movie and thus a recommend for a simple chill view.
