The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

the story that took the devil part of the title too literally……

A Hollywood movie featuring Keanu Reeves as Young undefeated Lawyer, Kevin Lomax,
Charlize Theron as Mary Ann the ever loving wife of Kevin and Al Pacino as a John Milton the boss at the Law firm in New York Kevin works.

the story begins with us seeing the skill and ability of Kevin to change the opinion of the jury of an truly guilty sex offender and allow him to walk free. this also put him under the radar of big firms like that lead by John Milton. this makes him take up the offer and move to New York with his wife Mary Ann. again showcasing his talents by setting up a jury for a case that for the firm on his First day. this makes him come under the guidance of john milton himself who sees future in the kid. All this while Mary is having hard time adjusting to the city and feeling the distance between Kevin and her widen. This causes a metal breakdown of her with she unable to keep her sanity. Certain associates of Kevin in the firm who were gonna rat on many illegal things that the firm does die under random suspicious circumstances. these instances causes Kevin’s mother who comes to visit Kevin and upon meeting Milton mentions to Kevin his father is John.

All this while a twist was in the movie the certain supernatural aspects of the movie turn out to be because of the the John the Literal Devil (not a joke). and he caused every thing so that Kevin will come to him and bring forth a child who can rule the world effectively become the Antichrist. A decision that Kevin disapproves and commits suicide…….only to wake up from a dream and realise he is still in the court for the earlier sex offender case, thus time he doesn’t help the guilty party and withdraws from representing him knowing he is guilty. but as the film ends we see that John was there in the court as so was what Kevin saw truly a dream…

this was a good movie with commendable performance from Al Pacino as the devil. but where the movie fell of the rail to me was the fact that the gimmick of devil in the movie itself didn’t set well with me, till nearly the first half of the movie i was enjoying it but from then onwords the film felt to go into a realm not meant for my taste.

yet the film does have its good points and is worth a watch for those who are interested in such a plot. definitely not for everyone.

Thattathin Marayathu (2012)

A Malayalam Rom-Com movie about inter caste love, the feeling of love sees no caste nor creed it just looks itself. the title means in English Beneath the Shadow of the veil

the story is about Vinod (Nivin Pauly) a middle class Hindu family son who at a wedding function causes the accident that results in Aisha (Isha Talwar) a Muslim and daughter of a party head. This incident causes Vinod to fall in love and be smitten with her. this causes him to follow her and try to stay around her (not in a stalker fashion), until on day he guts himself and and proposes to her, this leads to the wait for her reply. which eventually comes and is a mutual Feeling. This is the answer Vinod was waiting for. but this only started the problems for them as her father gets to know about her relation and is against it, because of his caste and background. they prevented from meeting each other but start communicating in letters and falling more in love.

the movie has a sweet premise but there were certain sequences where it lacks the charm or the pace felt a bit loose, overall its a fine movie though it has its share of cliques that are found in most rom-coms. its a simple movie and thus a recommend for a simple chill view.
